Types of Search Engine SubmissionDepending on the search engine,
there are three ways to submit your website each of which
are described lower down:
Is Search Engine Submission Necessary?
There is no question that for a website to be found, the search engines need to know
that it exists. Some companies and software vendors will
suggest that regular submission to the search engines will
get you found faster and helps your website ranking, however
the reality is that this has little if any impact on how
quickly you get listed, and absolutely no impact on your
ranking.By far the most common way for a new website or web page
to be found is by the search engine spiders following a link
to it from somewhere else. The most effective way to have a
new website indexed is to build links to it using a
link management program,
or you can opt for a Paid Inclusion
program.
In summary,
site submission is not strictly necessary. A website will be
listed much faster, and with much greater effect, by
building a number of links from other websites to your own.
For
those who want a less intensive
and more immediate approach
there are paid inclusion or paid
listing programs and XML feeds.
Some search engines offer a free submission service, the
most notable being Google. This allows you to enter one page
at at time to their database to be indexed. With the
exception of Google, most search engines that offer this are
minor, and Google site submission takes a very long time. A link management
program would be far more effective, and a produce results a
lot more quickly.
Paid inclusion or paid listing programs are not available for every search
engine, however these can help significantly when it comes
to getting new websites or web pages listed quickly. Paid
Inclusions programs allow you to submit any number of
individual pages for indexing.
Further to this these programs also provide significant
benefits for web pages with dynamic content. Paid Inclusion
programs not only guarantee a listing within a certain
timeframe, they also provide frequent revisits. When pages
are being delivered with changing content, these programs
are one of the best options to make sure your search engine
listings are up to date.
XML feeds are a recent introduction to the search engine community
and like paid inclusion programs, they are not available for
all search engines. They provide a greater control over how
your web pages are index, and listed in the results pages.
They don't guarantee where your website will rank, but the
listing and search results page summary are much more
controllable, and easier to update.
